Mission Statement
To conserve and restore indigenous cultural and natural resources within the traditional territories of indigenous Mutsun and Awaswas peoples; To steward our lands and waters, combining traditional resource and environmental management with contemporary approaches, ensuring a resilient future for all inhabitants of our ancestral lands and fulfilling our obligation to Creator; And to research and teach the ways of nature - returning to the path of traditional ecological knowledge that our ancestors followed for thousands of years.
About This Cause
Supporting the Amah Mutsun Land Trust means supporting the continuation of Native American culture, tradition, and indigenous resource stewardship practices along the central coast of California, within Santa Clara, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, and San Benito counties. We are a small, startup organization, created by the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band of 'Ohlone' Indians, that serves as a vehicle for our tribe's return to the lands and practices of our ancestors. We are a federally non-recognized tribe that owns no land, but through our land trust, we once again have the opportunity to access and steward lands that are integral to our healing and cultural survival. For millennia, our ancestors developed and applied traditional ecological knowledge about how to live sustainably on the land. Our indigenous stewardship practices of weeding, pruning, thinning, digging, harvesting, praying, and sparking low-intensity fires kept Mother Earth in balance and maintained abundant and healthy populations of native plants and animals. We want to restore these practices to the land for the benefit of all beings. We are living the consequences of events that took place seven generations ago, and our actions today will have an impact on seven generations into the future. Mother Earth needs all of us to join together now to care for our lands, to protect natural and cultural resources, and to create balance on the land, in our lives, and in our communities.
