About This Cause

The Institute of Sathya Sai Education-USA (ISSE-USA) achieves its programmatic mission to education through the Sathya Sai Education in Human Values (SSEHV) Program. SSEHV is a human values-based program of character development designed to develop and nurture one’s holistic potential and innate human goodness. It is compatible with all curricular standards and subject areas, and is readily adaptable to all ages, grade levels, cultures, and conditions. The SSEHV philosophy of 'Educare' goes to the heart of the true meaning of ‘education’, which is derived from the Latin word educare. ‘Educare’ means to draw out, or elicit, that which is within. With an emphasis on character and personal transformation from the inside-out, SSEHV inspires students and others to transform themselves by encouraging a confident and compassionate attitude towards all people and all forms of life, while inspiring and facilitating academic excellence and providing the practical skills that are needed to be successful in one’s personal, professional, family, and community life. SSEHV rests on the Five Human Values of Truth, Right Action, Peace, Love, and Nonviolence. Related values include self-confidence, compassion, courage, kindness, respect, integrity, honesty, self-control, caring, tolerance, respect for the environment, and many others. By integrating human values across the learning experience, SSEHV seeks to develop: - self-confidence and self-discipline; - critical thinking; - written and oral communication skills; - the full range of academic and social skills; - physical, intellectual, emotional, and moral balance; - positive regard for the rights, life, and dignity of all people; - harmonious living at home, at school, and in the community; - respect for the interdependence and unity of all life. The experience of universal human values encourages balanced development of character and personality. Such values can be experienced through a more mindful and creative use of teaching methods and techniques that are already familiar to teachers and other learning facilitators. There are two approaches to the use of SSEHV. The Direct Approach engages the five teaching techniques of EHV in one lesson. As shown below, this correlates with the 5 human values. By integrating the values across the cognitive content, this approach reinforces the selected values by impacting each of the learners’ personality domains in a single lesson. The Indirect Approach makes conscious use of selected methods as opportunities arise. These approaches can be used for both children and adults. In both cases, the lessons encourage heart-felt experience of the human value(s) and ongoing application at school, home, work, and in daily life. Human Values Teaching Methods Truth Positive Thought/Quote Right Action Silent Sitting/Reflection Peace Storytelling Love Group Singing/Music Nonviolence Cooperative Activities → Ongoing Life Application Lesson plans and learning experiences are intentionally built around human values. Teachers use values thematically across the entire curriculum and highlight their expression by mindful teaching and everyday example. The ISSE-USA faculty is culturally and demographically diverse. They possess professional credentials and postgraduate degrees in the fields of education, psychology, sociology, management, science, technology, and other fields. They have worked professionally with children, adolescents, and adults in schools, universities, and community organizations throughout the United States and internationally. The ISSE-USA faculty have excellent reputations for their multifaceted effectiveness and continuing contributions to schools and communities.
