Mission Statement

The Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation preserves U.S. Marine Corp aviation history, honors the service of its people and inspires in all generations an appreciation of America’s freedoms. The Foundation accomplishes its mission by supporting the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum and by offering U.S. history, aviation science and leadership programs to schools, the community and active duty military and their dependents.

About This Cause

The Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation provides financial and volunteer support to the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum. Through a collaboration with the Character Development Resource Center at the University of San Diego, it offers lessons in U.S. history, leadership, character, patriotism and aviation science to active duty military, veterans and civilians including K-12 students. The Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum is the only museum in the world primarily dedicated to USMC aviation, with the largest and most complete collection of historical aircraft flown by Marine pilots in the world. The collection includes many extremely rare and historically significant artifacts and aircraft from WWII to present day, including “Lady Ace”, the CH-46 helicopter that evacuated the U.S. ambassador from the rooftop of the embassy in Saigon on April 30, 1975. After the command at MCAS Miramar made the decision to close the museum in April 2021, the City of Irvine offered to house the collection in Hangar 296 in Great Park. The Foundation launched a fundraising campaign to save the collection and relocate the museum to Great Park in Irvine, CA. Great Park is the original MCAS El Toro and the original home of the museum. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed by the USMC, City of Irvine and the Foundation calling for the collection to be kept intact so it can be moved to the new location. Fundraising to transport the collection, rehab the hangar, design and build exhibits and hire museum staff is ongoing. Target date to open to the public in Irvine is August 2023. School programs include patriotically-themed essay and art contests in addition to school tours and classroom visits by veterans.
