Mission Statement

The San Diego Children’s Choir provides children with choral singing education and performance opportunities that foster excellence and collaboration at the highest artistic level, nurturing individual development and creating a foundation for lifelong success. The Choir enriches the cultural fabric of San Diego County through the transformative power of music.

About This Cause

Polly Campbell, a devoted music professional and educator, founded SDCC in 1990 to fill the void left by reductions to music classes in public schools. Since then SDCC has provided accessible, comprehensive choral music education and formative performance experiences to San Diego County children. What began decades ago with 42 enrollees in two ensembles has grown to serve over 2,000 children annually through six age-based ensembles (gr. 1-12), three introductory and outreach programs (preschool-5th gr.), an enriching touring program for choristers in grades 3-12, a special on-going research partnership with University of California San Diego (UCSD) on the impact of early childhood music education, and a new national youth choral festival for middle and high school choirs. Over 75% of children served are low-income and receive donor and grant funded free instruction. For many children, SDCC is the only accessible and affordable formal choral training program available. SDCC is the oldest and largest choral music program for children in the region, and we are the only countywide choral music program available to San Diego’s children. In San Diego over 80% of schools lack choral music education. SDCC works to fill this gap. Through its comprehensive curriculum, SDCC seeks to unlock the limitless potential of San Diego children. Impacts of our work include: developing competent, confident singers; unlocking future/potential success; increasing health and well-being; building community; and providing engagement with the arts. As an active performing arts organization, SDCC is woven into the fabric of the wider San Diego arts and cultural communities. We share our diverse repertoire in over 20 free and ticketed local performances annually, and regularly partner with professional arts organizations such as the San Diego Symphony, San Diego Master Chorale, and Mainly Mozart Youth Orchestra. Operating our growing programs costs over one million dollars annually, an enormous sum for a small, community-based performing arts organization. Earned revenue from tuition, ticket sales, and contracted performances account for an average of 50-60% of our budget. Grants and contributions make up the balance.
