Our goals are to re-socialize and rehome companion parrots and to educate the public about their complex mental, physical and emotional needs. We offer permanent sanctuary or rehoming depending upon what is in the best interest of each bird. We value integrity in all of our dealings with people and their companion birds.

About This Cause

Free Flight is a non-profit exotic bird (parrot) sanctuary whose mission is to accept companion parrots when owners are no longer able or willing to continue providing care for them, and to educate the public about what makes these creatures so incredible and worthy of our care and conservation efforts. Once a parrot is accepted into the resident flock, Free Flight commits to their care for as long as they need. About 30% of the flock are successfully adopted to wonderful new homes after undergoing a re-socialization period and developing a strong bond with the prospective new owner; others remain at the sanctuary in permanent residency due to age, chronic health conditions, challenging behaviors, or because they've demonstrated that they thrive best when they receive the constant level of enrichment and attention they receive in the sanctuary environment - which far exceeds what any household could provide on a daily basis. Free Flight is open to the public (by reservation) 7 days a week, which allows the parrots to socialize and interact with new people AND allows the people to learn more about the parrots. This community involvement is essential to each parrot's re-socialization process, as it helps them through their grief of being separated from their original human "flock" and come to discover that other humans can become trusted friends as well. During a typical visit, volunteer 'docents' are available to teach visitors about aviculture and share fun facts and anecdotes about the resident parrots that call the sanctuary "home." Free Flight's serves as a community education resource, as well. Through onsite and off-site programming and outreach events for people of all ages, staff aim to further inspire everyone to learn more about parrots, including why they aren't ideal pets for most people. Free Flight relies on the support of the community to continue working towards its mission, including visiting the sanctuary, purchasing annual memberships, volunteering, sponsoring a resident parrot, participating in education programs, donating, committing to planned giving, and more. The parrots and their team of devoted caretakers are forever grateful to all who make it possible to provide this safe haven for parrots in need and this platform to be a supportive voice for parrot welfare.
