Mission Statement
For just $25, you can change the life of an Afghan child and provide a child education, healthcare and recreation for one month but most of all with HOPE for the Future! For $75 you can provide a toolkit. When students graduate from a vocational class, each receives a tool kit. Help us to provide education and tool kits for their successful future. Funds raised will be used to pay the salaries of teachers in Afghanistan and to purchase tool kits for students that complete a vocational course. IOC has no paid staff in the United States, receives no funds from governmental agencies and depends on the goodwill and generosity of individuals to raise funds needed to pay expenses in Afghanistan.
About This Cause
International Orphan Care (IOC) is a non-profit, non-sectarian, non-political, humanitarian organization registered in Afghanistan as a Non-Governmental Organization, incorporated in the State of California and qualified as a charitable organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the US Internal Revenue Code. After over 40 years of war, the people of Afghanistan have endured lives filled with deprivation, brutality and anguish. An entire generation has lost their childhood. The children of Afghanistan are hungry, poor and unskilled. Our mission is HOPE - to Help Orphans be Productive and Educated – for a better tomorrow. We help rebuild shattered lives and ensure the health and well-being of Afghan children. International Orphan Care has been caring for orphans in Afghanistan since 1993. The Mir Mohammad Youssof Vocational School is located behind Darmalemeen High School in Jalalabad. The school building has classrooms for English, computer, math and vocational classes to train students in carpentry, electronics repair, mobile phone repair and tailoring, Beginning in 2002 the school enrollment included both boys and girls. Prior to the establishment of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, girls attended high school classes in the afternoon and came to the IOC school in the morning. Boys attended high school in the morning and came to the IOC school in the afternoon. Currently, girls after the sixth grade are not allowed to attend the school. The school has a garden and previously had basketball and volleyball courts for the boys, and indoor ping pong for the girls. The sports activities have been eliminated. The IOC school was established January 1993 in a rented building in Jalalabad as a vocational school providing work skills to the eldest son of a family whose father was deceased. The initial goal was to provide the boy with skills that would enable him to contribute financially to the support of the family and allow the younger siblings to attend school. In 2004 the family of Mir Mohammad Youssof donated funds from his estate to construct a vocational school on governmental land. The agreement with the government allows IOC to occupy the site rent free on the condition that the school is operated to provide vocational education to children that meet criteria of the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs. Records of graduations since 1993 are not available to document the number of graduates since the school opened. We do know from reports of students that attended the school in 1993-1996 that they were able to find employment and provide financial support to their families. Some of the former students currently reside in the United States and have attended IOC fund raising events to talk about their life and school experiences. Each year at the end of the academic year a graduation ceremony is held and approximately 300 certificates of completion are awarded to vocational students. Government officials, students' families and IOC board members attend the graduation. Students that have successfully completed a course are presented with a certificate and a set of tools appropriate for the course.
