Mission Statement
MIND Research Institute’s (MIND) mission is to ensure that all students are mathematically equipped to solve the world’s most challenging problems. MIND is the creator of ST Math®, a visual instructional program that builds a deep conceptual understanding of math through rigorous learning and creative problem solving to deeply engage, motivate, and challenge Pre-K-8 students toward higher achievement. ST Math incorporates the latest in learning and the brain, promoting mastery-based learning and mathematical understanding. Longitudinal and broad-based studies across diverse population groups continue to demonstrate ST Math’s efficacy in building life-long learners prepared for success in STEM fields. Currently, MIND is serving over 1.75 million students and 100,000 teachers in more than 8,700 schools across the United States. Seventy percent of the students we serve are from traditionally underserved backgrounds and two-thirds are considered low-income.
About This Cause
MIND Education engages, motivates, and challenges students toward mathematical success through its mission to mathematically equip all students to solve the world’s most challenging problems. MIND is the creator of ST Math, a PreK-8 visual instructional program that leverages the brain's innate spatial-temporal reasoning ability to solve mathematical problems, and InsightMath, a neuroscience-based K-6 curriculum that transforms student learning by teaching math the way the brain learns so all students are equipped to succeed. MIND Education provides impactful solutions to over 2.28 million students and 115,000 educators across the country. For over 20 years, MIND has been transforming math education through a simple idea: let's teach math the way children learn -- visually and experientially. MIND's unique approach accesses the brain's innate "spatial-temporal" reasoning ability, which enables students to solve mathematical problems visually. ST Math's unique approach builds a deep conceptual understanding of math (rather than a focus on memorization) through rigorous learning and creative problem-solving to engage, motivate and challenge students and help end the achievement gap. The program is designed to engage all children, regardless of socioeconomic, linguistic, or cultural background. With ST Math, we aspire to: -Advance a new generation of 21st-century critical thinkers and creative problem solvers. -Strengthen the path for youth towards STEM careers for a stronger and more diversified workforce. -Promote cultural change to shift perceptions around math from being scary and frustrating to exciting and essential! -Improve math performances and experiences for today's students. -Reinforce the importance of math skills by engaging students and educators in new methods of learning and teaching. -Empower students to become future innovators who will solve the world's most challenging problems. More underserved students will achieve math success in school and gain the knowledge, confidence and skills they need for higher educational attainment and 21st century careers. MIND works with schools to ensure the program is implemented with fidelity, which in turn correlates with greater student success and results. Teachers receive training to ensure smooth implementation and build stronger connections between personalized learning and classroom instruction. Schools using ST Math have repeatedly proven to double or triple their growth in math proficiency compared to non-ST Math schools on state assessments. In March 2018, WestEd released a study on ST Math (the largest of its kind) -- 42,000 students in 239 schools representing 74 districts across 14 states. Two outcomes were evaluated: average math scale scores and the proportion of students who were proficient or above in math. For both measures, grades that faithfully implemented ST Math improved significantly more than similar grades that did not use the program. The effect size across all grades averaged 0.36, surpassing the Federal 'What Works Clearinghouse' criteria for "substantively important" effect. For more information on this study and others that show ST Math's results, please see: https://www.stmath.com/impact/results. Not only does ST Math improve mathematical understanding, but it is also proven to improve student confidence in their mathematical abilities. A recent study, published by the Journal of Research on Technology in Education, found that students who play ST Math have higher mathematical self-beliefs than non-ST Math students, and this effect is greatest in lower-performing students (Rutherford, 2019). ST Math builds confidence and allays math anxiety because the program is self-paced, guides students with informative feedback, and utilizes progressive learning – as one success builds upon another, students begin to see themselves as mathematical problem solvers. In addition, MIND's successful track record and expertise is evidenced by various awards/recognition we have received pertaining to best programs and practices associated with our ST Math education programs including: •2021: SIIA CODiE Award – Best Foundational Mathematics Instructional Solution •2020: Tech Edvocate Award – Best Math App or Tool •2020: Digital Promise Research-Based Design Product Certification •2020: Named a “Top-Rated Nonprofit” by Great Nonprofits •2019: Winner of Two CODiE Awards: Best PreK-8 Mathematics Instructional Solution and Best Overall Education Technology Solution MIND's ST Math program was also recognized by the Business Roundtable as one of "Five Programs for 'Outstanding' Work in K-12 Education." The program has also received numerous other awards and accolades from education technology entities such as EdTech Digest and District Administration.
