Mission Statement

Providing refuge to displaced, captive-raised exotic animals for the REST of their lives, and educating people about responsible animal care and conservation.

About This Cause

Black Pine Animal Sanctuary is home to nearly 100 surrendered, abandoned, confiscated and recovered exotic animals representing over 50 species. Residents include lions, tigers, black bears, monkeys, reptiles, wolves, foxes, birds, and more. The exotic pet trade in America is regulated by a confusing patchwork of laws. It is still legal in many places to keep dangerous animals as "pets", endangering public safety and often without enough oversight to ensure humane conditions for animals. Black Pine offers a variety of educational programs that do not "use" the animals residents in the way that some roadside zoos and other venues do. The sanctuary does not buy, sell, breed, trade, or seek out animals. Visitors are provided guided tours to hear the personal stories of where the animals have come from to gain a better understanding of how they can make responsible decisions that will have a positive impact on captive animals and their wild counterparts, rather than exacerbating the problems associated with the exotic pet trade. Black Pine advocates for tighter regulations to curb the numbers of unwanted and displaced animals, and promotes the "GOOD LIFE" quiz to help citizens learn how to make responsible decisions about keeping any kind of animal as a pet.
