About This Cause

SAY: The Stuttering Association for the Young is a New York City-based non-profit arts and education organization that has worked with young people who stutter since 2001. SAY’s mission is to empower young people to help them build confidence and crucial skills through the transformative power of the arts. SAY provides access to its valuable education programs regardless of a family’s ability to pay, and the vast majority of youth we serve reside in underserved, low-income New York City neighborhoods. At SAY, we believe that every voice matters. SAY was founded in 2001 by Taro Alexander, an experienced theatre director, teacher, and performer and a person who stutters. Since our founding, SAY has produced hundreds of live performances featuring over 1,000 original plays, songs and musicals created by and starring our young participants, and served audiences of more than 40,000 people. SAY has provided over $2 million in financial aid so children from families-in-need could benefit from our programs. 97% of SAY’s alumni have gone on to pursue higher education, and participants have become so engaged with SAY that many alumni return to mentor the young people in our programs. SAY has grown and diversified its programming and currently provides direct services annually to approximately 250 young people who stutter, ages 3-18, and reaches another 6,000 people each year through public performances. SAY currently has 9 full-time employees, 75 part-time staff and more than 50 volunteers that support us annually. SAY recently completed a strategic planning process and has embarked on the implementation of a 5-year strategic plan to expand organizational capacity and program enrollment. Through local arts training and speech therapy programs in the New York Metropolitan Area and a national summer camp in Hendersonville, North Carolina, SAY helps young people transform their fear and shame from stuttering into empowering self-confidence that enables them to succeed and reach their personal, academic, and professional goals. The company serves youth who stutter, their family members and friends, ages 3 to 18, from diverse backgrounds. SAY is committed to providing access for youth from all ethnic and economic backgrounds, and we accomplish this by providing families in need with ample financial aid for program tuition. Since our inception, no child has ever been turned away due to a family's inability to pay.
