Mission Statement
The AHA Foundation is the leading organization working to end honor violence that shames, hurts or kills thousands of women and girls in the U.S. each year, and puts millions more at risk.
About This Cause
In 2007, women’s rights activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali founded the AHA Foundation to end honor violence that shames, hurts and kills thousands of women and girls in the U.S. each year and put millions more at risk. Despite the fact that millions of U.S. women and girls are at risk for honor violence, there are few organizations addressing this issue. Since inception, the AHA Foundation has become the leading organization that protects women and girls in the U.S. from harmful traditional practices, shifts cultural norms that condone violence and injustice among women and girls in the U.S., and promotes the importance of improving the status of women and girls to create lasting change. For example: ● The AHA Foundation has successfully lobbied to change both federal and state laws to better protect women and girls in the US, including enacting state legislation banning female genital mutilation and helping to convince the federal government to begin tracking honor violence in the U.S. ● Thousands of professionals - including law enforcement, domestic violence shelters, guidance counselors and physicians - likely to encounter victims of honor violence and forced marriage have been trained on how to appropriately identify and handle these distinctive cases. ● Hundreds of women and girls have reached out to the AHA Foundation seeking help in facing a situation of honor violence and have been connected with the services they need. As we look to the future, the AHA Foundation will continue to defend women and girls in the U.S. from harmful and sometimes deadly crimes, and enable survi¬vors of these experiences to thrive. But the AHA Foundation also will work to end honor violence that shames, hurts or kills thousands of women and girls in the U.S. each year, and puts millions more at risk, by addressing its root causes.
