Mission Statement

Rosie’s Theater Kids (RTKids) is dedicated to enriching the lives of young people through musical theater and the performing arts. We serve New York City public school students who might not have the opportunity to experience theater and positively change the trajectory of their lives by providing them with comprehensive classes in music, dance and drama along with thoughtful mentoring and structured academic guidance. Our goal is to inspire excellence, motivate learning, uplift the human spirit, build confidence, and spark a lifelong appreciation for the arts.

About This Cause

RTKids teaches the components of a high quality musical theater education via two signature programs. PS Broadway is a 12 to 15-week in-school program that introduces musical theater to fifth grade New York City public school students. This joyful program is provided to their elementary schools at a highly subsidized rate to ensure equitable access to all students. Every fifth grade student at each participating school takes part in the program led by an RTKids-trained teaching artist and musician, and a Broadway performer presents a private concert and answers questions at the end of each semester. Each semester is taught around a special theme. Students learn and perform songs from various Broadway shows, and the semester culminates in an incredible final performance for parents, educators, and classmates Upon completion of their PS Broadway class, outstanding fifth graders are invited to audition for ACTE II (A Commitment to Excellence), our signature scholarship program for New York City public school students in grades 6-12. Once accepted, they begin their dance, drama, and music classes in the summer before sixth grade and continue through their high school graduation. Students meet multiple times after school each week and on Saturdays to participate in intensive performing arts classes at the Maravel Arts Center taught by experienced professionals. Our high school students are also members of a performance ensemble that meets on Saturdays and works with members of the New York City arts community to develop special pieces for public performances. As part of their participation in ACTE II, all students receive academic support through Assured Guaranty’s Arts Plus Program, which includes academic tutoring, mentoring, subject tutoring, and formal PSAT/SAT preparation, among other needs. With the support of caring RTKids staff, students learn how to organize their work, meet deadlines, get tutoring if needed, write essays, and develop good work habits in Maravel’s fully-equipped study room. High school seniors are guided by experts through the college application process, receiving individualized help with choosing their schools, drafting their personal statements, completing their applications, and accurately filling out their financial aid forms.
