Mission Statement
Our vision is that every child receives one daily meal in their place of education and that all those who have more than they need, share with those who lack even the most basic things. Working together with those who share our vision, we believe there is no good reason why this cannot be realized. Mary’s Meals is a global movement supported by people from many walks of life and different backgrounds. Our mission is to enable people to offer their money, goods, skills, time, or prayer, and through this involvement, provide the most effective help to those suffering the effects of extreme poverty in the world’s poorest communities. We welcome all into the Mary’s Meals family and we believe everyone has something important to contribute to the realization of our vision.
About This Cause
School + Food = Hope International Grassroots Charity, Mary's Meals, provides meals to chronically hungry children in their place of learning. In this way, the hungry child is attracted to the classroom where they can gain a better future for themselves and their community. Mary's Meals is now feeding 2,058,099 hungry children in 19 countries every school day. It only costs $21 to feed a child for an entire school year. This is possible because of all the volunteers on the ground in these communities partnering with us to cook and serve the meals for their children. Mary's Meals provides locally grown food when possible to the community of volunteers and they do the cooking and serving. We have 80,000 volunteers in Malawi alone. Mary's Meals also provides food storage and monitoring of the program. Third party independent studies have shown that these meals reduce hunger among children, increase school enrollment levels, improve school attendance and help to eliminate absences attributed to hunger, reduce the number of children dropping out of school, increase feelings of happiness at school and decrease levels of anxiety due to hunger. The research observed an increased support for education among vulnerable communities. Read more in founder, Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow's books "The Shed that Fed a Million Children" and "Give".
