About This Cause
NAMI Summit County (NAMI-SC) is a grassroots, self-help organization formed in 1986. It is comprised of families and friends, and those suffering from severe mental illness. It is a local affiliate of NAMI Ohio and the National Alliance on Mental Illness which was founded in 1979. All of its services are run through volunteers, with oversight by its executive director and program manager. NAMI SC fulfills its mission by offering services as detailed below: NAMI Family Support support group meetings for families at several locations NAMI Connection support group meetings for Consumers at several locations NAMI Family to Family- a free, 8 session educational program for family, significant others, and friends of people with mental health conditions. NAMI Homefront- a free, 6-session program for families, caregivers and friends of military members and vets with mental health conditions. Online. NAMI Basics a free 6-week course for parents of young children with mental illness. Online. NAMI Peer to Peer is a unique, experiential learning program for people with any serious mental illness who are interested in establishing and maintaining their wellness and recovery. (8-session course). NAMI Ending the Silence is an engaging presentation that helps audience members learn about the warning signs of mental health conditions and what steps to take if you or a loved one are showing symptoms of a mental health condition. NAMI’s Needy Soles program provides clients with new shoes, and boots. NAMI’s Housewarming Project provides household items to clients enabling them to live independently in their own apartments. NAMI’s Creative Kids Program provides funding for low-income children diagnosed with mental illness to attend extra-curricular activities to supplement and advance their recovery. NAMI’s Hair Care Program provides mentally ill clients with a voucher redeemable at The Akron Barber College and Beyond Expectation Barber College to obtain hair care. NAMI’s Client Activity and Socialization Fund (CAS) provides clients with movie passes, baseball tickets, picnics, holiday meals, etc., provides a monthly pizza and pop party to clients staying at Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES). Helps brighten the holiday season by providing gifts to clients at local mental health agencies which are supported by the Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Board (ADM Board), and the Summit County Jail. NAMI distributes Newcomer Packets which contain helpful, informative materials about mental illness, locally available services, and coping strategies. NAMI presents at the Crisis Intervention Team classes, NEOMED residents at Cleveland/Akron General and Summa, The University of Akron School of Nursing, Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare, the Summit County Sheriff’s Department, civic organizations, churches, and staff from local fire departments and EMS workers.
