Mission Statement
The mission of Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity is to bring people together to build homes, communities and hope in Lucas County, Ohio and around the world. Founded in 1988, Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity's focus has been on, and will always be on, providing lower-income families and homeowners a path to homeownership and the opportunity to live in a safe, decent and affordable home.
About This Cause
Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity has three programs: Homeownership, Repairs, and ReStore. Homeownership Program Habitat for Humanity provides a pathway to fulfill applicants' dreams of owning their own home. Through our education program focused on financial management and home maintenance, applicants will learn how to take on the responsibilities of homeownership. And by working to build and rehab their own home (as well as others’), they will learn how to maintain and care for their home. The education program and construction experience are the main parts of “Sweat Equity,” which is the time Future Homeowners spend in partnership with us to prepare for homeownership. New or rehabbed homes are ultimately purchased with a 0% interest mortgage. Homeownership applicants are considered based on three criteria. 1. Need: Total income must be below 60% of the Average Median Income (AMI) for Lucas County, Ohio. Also, current living situation must be inadequate 2. Ability to Pay: Income must be more than 30% of AMI. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to pay a monthly mortgage. 3. Willingness to Partner with Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity. Repair Program Home Repair Program in intended for applicants who own their home and need help completing or affording health and safety related repairs. Approved applicants only pay for the cost of the required materials to accomplish the repair plus a small administrative fee. Most approved applicants use the 0% interest, 1-2 year payment plan that we offer. Applicants' payment plan is based upon their income, ability to pay, and the scope of their repair. All labor is donated. Some of the repairs we assist with include installation of insulation, fixing water damage (and preventing it from occurring again), replacement of exterior doors and windows, and repair of porches and railings. We do a limited number of roof replacements each year and also provide exterior painting, grading and landscaping. As the homeowner, they will complete “Sweat Equity” or volunteer hours. The amount of hours they will be asked to complete depends on the size of the project and their abilities, but usually involves helping with prep and actual work as well as being present during the repair. Applicants can ask family members and friends to help them achieve some of their hours. Applicants' income must be below 60% of the Average Median Income (AMI) for Lucas County, Ohio, and the scope of their repair must be health or safety related. ReStore Habitat for Humanity ReStore is a nonprofit home improvement store and donation center that sells new and gently used furniture, appliances and home accessories to the public at 25%-80% off original retail prices. Proceeds from sales are used to build and repair homes with and for our low-income neighbors here in Lucas County, Ohio. ReStore supports Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity’s vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
