Mission Statement
Created out of a Christian sense of ministry, Malachi House serves persons who are terminally ill with less than 6 months to live, at no cost or regard to gender, race, religion or national origin. Our Home ministers to individuals who need an available caregiver, who have limited or no financial resources and are in need of special home care in the final stages of life. A trained staff and volunteers provide spiritual, emotional and physical support with the assistance of a hospice team.
About This Cause
Malachi House, nestled in the historic Ohio City neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio, is a pioneering effort founded in 1988 to serve persons who are terminally ill, who have no financial means or caregiving support, and might otherwise spend their final days alone. Over the past 25 years, Malachi House has served as a final home for over 1,895 people, as we've cared for them 15 at a time. Preservation of human dignity for terminally ill individuals without financial resources was the inspiration behind the formation of Malachi House in 1988. It’s not unusual for a cleric to encounter death. But for Father Paul Hritz, pastor of St. Malachi Church on Cleveland’s near West Side, all too often he found neighborhood people dying alone and spending the last days of their lives in makeshift shelters under bridges or in abandoned cars. He and others envisioned the creation of a home-like setting where compassionate people would provide care and attention to those who would otherwise spend their final days of their lives alone and in poverty. Malachi House is a unique charity in Northeast Ohio and does not receive any kind of governmental funding; we rely solely upon the generosity of individuals, corporations and foundations. Our home maintains a pure mission—to meet our residents’ immediate and basic human needs of food, shelter, clothing and comfort. However, our loving care is supplemented with other essential programming, such as music therapy to enhance the quality of life for our residents. Care at Malachi House is designed to ensure that one’s final days are as comfortable as possible, emphasizing dignity and respect for the individual to the end of natural life.
