Mission Statement

The goal of Sisters Academy of Baltimore is to help young girls achieve their full potential and break from the cycle of poverty. To accomplish this, the school educates 10 to 13-year-old girls with promise who would not otherwise have access to an excellent middle school program.

About This Cause

Mission and Purpose Sisters Academy of Baltimore, a Catholic, community-centered middle school, educates girls of different races, ethnic groups, and religions from families of limited economic means, particularly those in southwest Baltimore. The Academy empowers its students to become agents of transformation in their families, communities, and society. Sisters Academy is the only school of its kind in the Baltimore area: an independent, tuition-free middle school exclusively for girls from low-income families. Ninety percent (90%) of the students’ families qualified for the federal free or reduced-price meals program, a generally accepted measure of poverty. Their socio-economic status restricts the chances of receiving an excellent education at a critical time of life. Sisters Academy provides a solution. Each girl is recognized as an individual within the school’s nurturing community. Students learn to work hard, set goals for themselves, and take on leadership roles. The program objectives challenge students to demonstrate the skills of logical thinking, perceptive reading, competent writing, and effective problem solving. Our vision is that the graduates will be well-educated, self-assured, spiritual, and committed young women who are so needed in our community, nation, and world. They will become leaders who make a positive difference. Organizational Background Sisters Academy of Baltimore is an innovative, tuition-free middle school for girls founded by four religious congregations of women: the School Sisters of Notre Dame, the Sisters of Bon Secours, the Sisters of Mercy, and the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. Sisters Academy opened on September 7, 2004 with the fifth grade. For the next three years, new grades were added as students progressed. In September 2007, students were enrolled students in all four grades (5, 6, 7, and 8) for the first time. The first class of eighth graders graduated on June 4, 2008. In August 2020, the school began its seventeenth year of providing a strong academic program sensitive to students needs with resources that offer an excellent program of study. Sisters Academy is guided by a plan “Moving the Mission Forward: Strategic Plan for Improvement,” that continues to move the school moving ahead through this second decade. With a committed Board of Directors providing leadership and expertise, the school’s management has achieved several operational accomplishments. Sisters Academy owns its school buildings and has no debt. Each year, 100% of the funds raised meet the goals for the annual budget.
