Mission Statement
The St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Joseph County serves people living in poverty in Northern Indiana through programs intended to relieve emergencies, to provide support, and to encourage self-sufficiency. We provide help in the form of food, clothing/household goods vouchers, rent and utility assistance, job searches, resume building, Christmas help, and beds (for children). We believe in joining together our staff, volunteers, donors, and partners in order to tackle poverty in our community. Together, we work to empower those we serve to help them move from a state of food and housing insecurity to a state of self-sufficiency and success.
About This Cause
The St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Joseph County was founded in 1904 by 30 members of St. Patrick's Parish in South Bend, Indiana. The members served the community through person-to-person service, with an emphasis on providing food, clothing, and financial assistance. Present day, the Society has continued to emphasize person-to-person service. Our programs have expanded to include our food pantry, home visits, clothing vouchers, financial assistance, and Sweet Dreams Ministry. The Society offers tangible assistance to those in need on a person-to-person basis. What makes our organization unique is personalized involvement through home visits. Volunteers take food into the homes of neighbors in need, providing immediate assistance. Additional aid may take the form of intervention, consultation, or direct dollar or in-kind service. An essential precept of the Society's work is to provide help while conscientiously maintaining the confidentiality and dignity of those who are served.
