Mission Statement

Mental Health America of Indiana (MHAI) is Indiana’s leading mental health and substance use advocacy organization. We are dedicated to providing overall mental wellness and recovery for all Hoosiers. Mental Health America of Indiana’s mission is to work for Indiana’s mental health and victory over mental illness.

About This Cause

MHAI works to reduce barriers to access mental wellness and recovery for all Hoosiers. Our organization develops partnerships with stakeholders in Indiana to promote behavioral health advocacy and public policy. MHAI provides services and programs that achieve this mission through five organizational pillars: (1) Prevention Pillar: Emphasizes early identification and intervention through mental health screenings. Programs under this pillar include the Indiana Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking (ICRUD), Indiana Collegiate Action Network (ICAN), Infancy Onward, and Indiana Alliance on Prenatal Substance Exposure (IAPSE). (2) Crisis and Clinical Services Pillar: Provides a range of services to address mental health and substance use needs for residents during crisis through its contract as a 988 crisis call center. It also offers a continuum of clinical therapy services for ongoing treatment and support. Therapeutic services include art therapy, trauma therapy, and group therapy to address various life challenges. (3) Recovery Pillar: Strives to connect communities to resources and increase peer supports, significantly impacting behavioral health and promoting recovery from mental illness and substance use. The Indiana Recovery Network (IRN) serves as a vital resource locator for recovery support services across the state, aiming to eliminate barriers to accessing recovery resources and boasts over 100 member organizations focused on recovery. The Recovery Pillar also works to address the impact of criminal justice involvement by providing programming, technical assistance, and advocacy to support individuals and families affected by incarceration through the Integrated Reentry and Correctional Support (IRACS) Program. (4) Education and Credentialing: Offers training and certification for behavioral health professionals through ICAADA and the MHAI Stanley W. DeKemper Training Institute. Other programs in this pillar include Indiana Affiliation of Recovery Residences (INARR) and Indiana Association of Peer Recovery Support Services (IAPRSS) which educate peer recovery support professionals and recovery residence providers. The Indiana Suicide Prevention Network (ISPN) uses statewide collaboration to enhance prevention efforts. (5) Mental Health America of Indianapolis: MHA Indianapolis’ mission is to address the behavioral health needs of the greater Indianapolis area by encouraging the collaboration of the strengths and assets of Indianapolis-based organizations and to work towards solutions that will support communities. MHAI Indianapolis has served as the coordinator of the City’s behavioral Health ARPA funds, providing $7.8 million in funding via the Vitality Grant Program, for projects and programs focusing on juvenile justice and mental health systems reform in Indianapolis. In addition, MHA Indianapolis has created an Indy LOSS (Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors) Team and the IAIC Recovery Hub Drop-in Center to support the local community.
