Mission Statement

Little Red Door Cancer Agency’s mission is to make the most of life and the least of cancer. Since 1945, Little Red Door has worked to alleviate the physical, emotional, and financial burdens of cancer for low-income, underserved Hoosiers.

About This Cause

Founded in 1945, Little Red Door Cancer Agency began as a grassroots effort to provide free cancer education at a time when the disease was widely misunderstood and shrouded in stigma. Operating from a small WWII-era barracks with a distinctive red door, the Agency quickly became a trusted ally for cancer patients and their families—offering knowledge, resources, and early forms of direct support, such as a loan cupboard stocked with sickroom supplies. By 1950, Little Red Door had joined forces with United Way of Central Indiana, securing sustainable funding to expand its impact, and in 1953, it officially received a nonprofit charter as the Marion County Cancer Society. As medical advancements reshaped cancer care and public awareness increased, the Agency adapted to meet emerging needs, evolving into a comprehensive provider of cancer support services. In 1995, after decades of being affectionately known as “Little Red Door,” the organization officially rebranded as Little Red Door Cancer Agency. Today, Little Red Door operates with the mission to make the most of life and the least of cancer. Headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, we provide no-cost programs and services to cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers, focusing on low-income and medically underserved Hoosiers. We serve adults in 14 counties and youth in all 92 Indiana counties, ensuring that cancer patients have access to transportation, nutritional support, medical supplies, wellness programs, and more. In 2024, we served 2,296 individuals in active treatment and impacted 3,805 people across 58 Indiana counties. Key programs include Rides of Hope, which provided 21,878 transportation trips to treatment; Nutritional Supplements, which delivered 114,216 meals to 700 patients; and Michelle’s Boutique, which supplied essential medical items and wigs to those facing treatment-related side effects. Additionally, Camp Little Red Door expanded youth programming by nearly 40%, and our Door to Wellness initiative provided over 2,500 wellness sessions to improve quality of life. For nearly 80 years, Little Red Door has remained a lifeline for those affected by cancer, ensuring that patients can focus on healing—not the financial, logistical, or emotional burdens that come with the devasting, life-altering diagnosis.
