The Urban League of Northwest Indiana provide services in the areas of education, financial stability, diversity and inclusion to families and stakeholders throughout Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties.
About This Cause
Our Mission The Urban League of Northwest Indiana works to promote, encourage and enhance services to improve social, educational, and economic conditions of African Americans and other minority groups in Lake, Porter, and LaPorte Counties. Our Vision To ensure that the Urban League of Northwest Indiana becomes the premiere agency that supports and promotes neighborhood community collaborations towards the improvement, capacity building, and awareness of citizens in areas of education, financial literacy, health/wellness, civic/civil leadership, and diversity throughout Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties; which would encourage a better quality of life. Our History The Urban League of Gary was founded in 1945 as an Affiliate of the National Urban League. The Urban League was founded as a civic organization established for the purpose of removing the racial barriers that prevented African Americans from enjoying equal opportunities in housing, employment, education and the many other facets of American life. On June 25, 1945 the Urban League of Gary was born with the commitment to strive for equal opportunities for all citizens. In December 1970, the Board of Directors voted to reorganize as the Urban League of Northwest Indiana, Inc., to better reflect the service community of the Lake Area United Way – thereby serving Lake, Porter, and LaPorte Counties. Diversity and Inclusion Symposium usually held annually in the Spring The Symposium includes invigorating workshops, opportunities to engage in programs that further diversity education, and tools that can be used for making positive changes within any organization and community. Diversity and Inclusion Luncheon usually held annually in the Spring The Diversity and Inclusion Luncheon recognizes community leaders who with purpose have impacted and influenced their company or communities by raising awareness and or bringing educational opportunities to the forefront which highlight the need for a diverse environment. Diverse environments are collaborative efforts which help to make companies and communities equitable and inclusive. These nominated change agents are public acknowledge during this event. Scholastic Luncheon usually held annually in the Spring Scholarship recipients receive their scholarship checks and receive recognition for their academic accomplishments in the presence of their peers and school administrators. In addition to the scholarship winners, the ULNWI invites all students who have a 3.0 GPA or higher to attend the luncheon and provides them with certificates of excellence in acknowledgment of their academic achievement. Scholarship Fair usually held annually in the Fall Over 70 ++ Colleges and Universities, from across the country, offer on the spot admission and partial and full scholarships to high school graduating seniors who meet eligibility and criteria for immediate acceptance. Additional scholarship opportunities and career options also available for returning adults and student interests in vocational career paths.
