About This Cause

The Jay County Boys Club, Inc was founded as a 501©3 non-profit agency in 1953 in the basement of a local church. Since then, the organization has evolved into a comprehensive community recreational center, while taking on a new name as the Jay Community Center. Today the center offers programming for all ages. JCC continuously raises funds to support its 36,000 sqft facility. The breakdown of revenue streams is roughly 80% programming and 20% fundraising. Like other community centers, JCC provides youth instructional sports, a fitness center, and low cost senior programming. JCC also offers competitive youth basketball leagues that operate in the late fall and winter. Boomer Sports is JCC’s youth sports brand. Boomer Instructional Sports serve ages 3-14, costs $50 and every participant receives a practice ball to keep. Boomer Basketball, JCC’s most successful program, attracts over 440 youth per season. JCC also offers three basketball tournaments and 2 basketball leagues. The leagues are JCC’s largest fundraisers and bring in over 120 teams into our community. JCC will utilizes up to 9 basketball courts in Portland, Indiana and can host up to 55 teams per tournament. JCC’s after school and summer programs provide area families a safe, staffed, affordable alternative to traditional day care and latch key services. The programming also provides tutoring, healthy snacks, and day trips while keeping the participants active. The after school program is Monday through Thursday throughout the school year and cost only $20 per year and consistently attracts up to 200 area youth. The summer program attracts over 160 area youth and operates the entire summer break Monday – Friday 7:30am to 5:30pm. Day campers can attend for only $10 per day. Senior programming is offered to anyone 55 and older and includes over 20 different fitness classes, social/recreational activities per week. The focus of senior programming at JCC is to enhance the quality of life of area seniors by keeping their minds and bodies active. Senior programming visits for this fiscal year are expected to surpass 25,000 visits. Recently the 100 Miles and 100 Days program ended with 35 participants. Miles walked by the participants while at JCC totaled roughly 4500 miles with one senior walking 388 miles. The 100 Miles in 100 Days is a great example how a smaller program can produce huge results. JCC also has one of the largest indoor pickle ball facilities in the state with over 7 indoor courts.
