Mission Statement

Monroe County United Ministries (MCUM) creates lasting solutions to economic, educational, and social injustice in our community through quality services, collaboration, and innovation. Our vision is to eliminate generational poverty for the people we serve.

About This Cause

MCUM serves the low/no income families of Monroe County through two programs, Compass Early Learning Center and the Self-Sufficiency Center. MCUM’s Self-Sufficiency Center (SSC) provides food through our client choice food pantry, cleaning and hygiene products through our cleaning and hygiene closet, and clothing and household items for free through our partnership with a local resale shop. Clients may also request financial assistance from MCUM to help pay a portion of rent or utility bills to keep clients in their homes with their lights and heat on and preventing eviction. The SSC is also home to the Your Path program. Your Path is a roadmap to Self-Sufficiency. Participants complete a short application describing which area(s) of their lives – family stability, housing, transportation, wellness, career, education, or financial management – they would like to work on. Working with a coach for 1-3 years, participants can expect to be connected with resources to help them achieve their goals and will be supported during the triumphs as well as the challenges. In addition, we have also opened up a Microloan program which provides small, low-barrier, personal loans of up to $1000 to members of the community who lack access to traditional sources of affordable credit. MCUM’s Compass Early Learning Center provides full day, full year care to children from ages 1-5 years old, offering our own fee scale in addition to federal and state funding assistance programs. Its goals are to prepare children for school, support parents’ employment and education opportunities, and provide services to promote each child’s development. Compass serves about 85 children at a time and as many as 180 per year. Of those enrolled in 2021, more than 85% live in homes at the low-moderate income level or below with almost 40% considered extremely low income. We utilize a play-based creative curriculum that emphasizes literacy, communication, and math skills while using the Conscious Discipline method to encourage the development of the children’s emotional intelligence. Compass provides daily meals and snacks, annual preventative health screenings, and enriching activities like field trips to WonderLab Museum and summer swimming lessons. We are currently working with Catholic Charities to bring LCSW onsite to work with the children at Compass. Our goals are to make sure our graduates leave ready for kindergarten while removing a barrier to their parents’ education or employment.
