Mission Statement
Bringing hope and encouragement with Christ-like love to emotionally hurting people.
About This Cause
Hope Alive is a unique Christian ministry dedicated to serving poor and underserved people struggling with mental health issues in northern Indiana. Through our two programs, Residential Housing and Community Counseling/Intern Program, hurting people gain an understanding and confidence of their worth as capable individuals who are valued and loved regardless of their mental health need. Hope Alive also works to dispel the stigma surrounding mental illness through education and awareness. Consequently, the Hope Alive staff sees their tenure as more than just jobs. Working at Hope Alive in either paid or volunteer positions is a personal commitment to love and compassion. Staff regularly credits the peaceful and collaborative environment to setting the stage for a positive experience for all. Our Residential Housing Program is one-of-a-kind in Fort Wayne in that our residents receive weekly counseling and case management as well as attending two support groups a week which focus on mental wellbeing. Our services are aimed at helping residents address and resolve underlying mental health struggles, while also developing positive coping skills, independent living skills, and an increased sense of hope and self-worth. All residents may also choose to receive counseling and case management for free for life, so that they can remain emotionally healthy and stable once they leave our program. Hope Alive has the capacity to serve 17 women at one time and is committed to investing in vulnerable individuals by strengthening resiliency, developing coping skills and increasing self-worth. The Hope Alive Community Counseling Program makes low-cost mental health counseling services available to the underserved in our community. Professional counselors provide counseling to people of all ages, races, genders, and backgrounds, who seek mental health services often not affordable elsewhere. Hope Alive is committed to standing in the gap so that no one suffers with mental health issues due to financial need. Nearly 100% of those we serve fall at or below 130% of the federal poverty line. While we charge just $25 per session, no one is turned away for their inability to pay. We regularly work with individuals, couples and families to help the hurting in our community find hope and healing and deal with issues such as depression, anxiety, substance use, trauma, and relationship difficulties. Hope Alive also offers master’s Level counseling internships. We believe the impact of this investment on the counseling profession will increase access to mental and/or behavioral health care for all members of our community by reducing the national shortage of qualified mental health professionals. The Hope Alive staff is present in the community, speaking at chapel services, expos, and networking with other social service agencies. Our goal is to propel the message that mental health is important, real and accessible. Similarly, mental health struggles are not a personal failure or spiritual weakness and Hope Alive is a place people can go to receive love, hope and healing. Through 50 years of experience serving our community, our staff has remained committed to showing and speaking the love of Christ to our clients while teaching, promoting, and facilitating the various skills necessary for physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. We work in a holistic way, addressing the whole person – assessing and addressing mental, emotional, physical and spiritual needs. Everything that we do is focused on promoting mental wellness and providing mental health care to the most underserved in our community. Both our Community Counseling Program clients and the residents of our Residential Housing Program go through an extensive intake process to assess for the various biological, psychological, social, and spiritual needs. Individualized treatment plans and program goals are set for every client. While Hope Alive does serves people of all religious backgrounds, as an organization, the commitment to advancing the Gospel of Jesus Christ while providing mental wellness services, is paramount. As part of our intake process, each client is assessed for any spiritual beliefs and if we have permission to integrate Christianity into counseling. When given such permission, we happily bring Bible-centered and gospel-focused conversation to the mental health counseling we provide, believing that true mental wellness comes from not only addressing the biological illness, emotional and relational challenges, but also the spiritual needs of the client. For those clients who do not want this integrated approach, we respect their wishes but do continue to pray privately and trust the Holy Spirit to use our work together for good healing in our clients’ lives. Additionally, we assess clients for past trauma that may have involved a church or religion-related issue. When such wounds are identified, we take extra care not to perpetuate that trauma but, rather, seek to bring intentional healing to those areas, so that our clients may re-engage with the church and their relationship with God in healthy and positive ways.
