Mission Statement
Our vision is to renew the heart of a nation by freeing people from physical and spiritual poverty. Our mission is to transform how people live and think and build strong, self-sufficient communities in Ethiopia and beyond through new knowledge, better health, sustainable food sources and strengthened character for all people as a living example of the love of Jesus Christ.
About This Cause
Project Mercy® is an international community development and emergency relief agency. As a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Project Mercy®, under the leadership of a board of directors, has taken a vested interest in a community development project in Yetebon, a rural area of 70,000 people in south central Ethiopia, approximately 90 miles south of Addis Ababa. Project Mercy’s main objective is to improve adverse living conditions in the target community through the development of social and economic infrastructures with active participation on behalf of the community. Project Mercy is working to strengthen community and alleviate systemic poverty through education, skills training, health care, nutrition, agriculture, orphan care, infrastructure, and spiritual formation. As stated by Marta Gabre-Tsadick, co-founder and CEO, “In order to fight against poverty you have to attack it from many different directions and then pluck it out. We cannot just educate children if the only outcome is to make them discontented with limited job opportunities available to them. We cannot just treat symptoms of malnutrition in the clinic if we don’t improve nutrition and agriculture production. We cannot just teach good hygiene practices if people still need to bathe and drink from the same contaminated water supply. Clean water piped into each home is possible but only if economic conditions are improved for the entire community. And all of these are just physical changes if we don’t also bring the transforming knowledge of Jesus Christ. Project Mercy is intended to do all these things in order to be a means of transformation through which God’s love renews the heart of the nation.” Project Mercy is referred to by former U.S. Ambassador Tony Hall as the best community development project in Africa and perhaps the world. God has allowed Project Mercy to be an instrument of significant influence in Ethiopia. Lives are being changed and multi-generational poverty is in the process of being plucked out. Individuals, families and communities are being served.
