About This Cause
The Dare to Dream Mentoring program is a program component of Old Liberty Preservation Society, LTD, a nonprofit 501(c)3 tax exempt corporation, in support of the Liberty Lifeline Tutoring and Mentoring Program. We endeavor to assess and meet the needs of all people, when possible. One of our target areas are students in grades 6-12, living in Evansville's center-city. The goal is to provide these young people with Information, Education and Inspiration, so they may excel, become productive citizens, and have the opportunity to live life to its fullest. We challenge these youth to "DARE to DREAM", by providing an opportunity to view and interact with people of like kind, and afford them the opportunity to dream of someday seeing themselves pursuing a post-secondary education, while also exposing the to a rich history of Americans, who against all odds, 'dared to dream" and made a difference in our community and the lives of all people, The foundation of our mentoring program are the "seven Essential Life Skills". Which have been identified as; Focus and Self-control, Perspective Taking, Communicating, Making Connections, Critical Thinking, Taking On Challenges and self-directed, Engaged Learning. Students attend interactive workshops covering these topics, where these skill are examined and moderated by adults from with-in our community As a result of these workshops, students are able to experience positive outcomes, including the ability to engage in safe, high quality activities and to increase healthy behaviors in community as well as school. These workshops prepare them to handle life situations, promotes a sense of connectedness, which will impact school attendance and test scores for those attending. Currently, there are 179 students participating in our programs. An additional component of our program is providing opportunities to explore future/career opportunities by participating in career workshops on health care, law enforcement, information systems, military and other career areas. For the last five years, students have earned the opportunity to visit Historically Black Colleges and Universities in six different states, for a total of sixteen (16) schools. as well as the Civil Rights Museum, the Tuskegee Airmen Museum and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change
