Mission Statement

The Multicultural Child and Family Hope Center (MCFHC) is a growing non profit social service agency, located in the heart of Downtown Tacoma, that operates 14 different programs that are dedicated to serving children and families who are experiencing homelessness, foster care, CPS involvement, reunification, or fighting barriers to escaping poverty such as lack of employment, education or transportation. MCFHC is a family-oriented childcare center, preschool program, and social service agency serving the people of this in-need community.

About This Cause

MCFHC has been a non-profit 501(c) (3) since July of 2006, although the executive director and a handful of staff have been serving children and families for over 20 years. Through our various programs, our center provides a safety-net of resources and services to any individual or family that walks through our doors. We endeavor to meet each person where they are at in their needs and build relationships to foster generational change for their future. We hold in high regard the belief that generational change begins with addressing whole child, and in result, the whole family. In our childcare, school age and early learning programs, we serve an average of 350 to 420 children on site each day from the age of 6 weeks to 11 years old. Our teaching staff are trained in early learning and have or are completing degrees in early childhood education. They work to exhibit empathy, compassion and isolating underlying concerns in children to address issues and teach proper problem solving strategies and social-emotional development. The Early Head Start (EHS) (0-3 years old) and Early Childhood Education Assistance Program (ECEAP) (3-5 years old) provide early childhood education for low-income, homeless, foster families or those who are receive public or state financial assistance. Health and Developmental screenings are conducted on these children to address any early intervention necessary and encourage kindergarten readiness for both the child and their family. We partner closely with the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) Children's Administration Department, providing childcare for children who have been removed from their homes by CPS and are waiting to be placed in a foster home. Since we are the only childcare facility that will take children with behavior, mental, we provide care for children from not only Pierce, but King, Snohomish, Thurston, and Kitsap counties. Here, these children are in a friendly, safe and loving environment; a healthier alternative, in lieu of waiting in an office with their social worker until they find placement. For individuals struggling with substance abuse or have mental health concerns, MCFHC's Recovery Cafe facilitates circle groups and assigns recovery coaches who are matched with clients to support and aid the recovery navigation process. These individuals work toward obtaining housing, enrolling in job training programs or completing counseling services as they approach recovery. The Father Engagement Program provides classes and training for fathers who are working toward regaining custody of their children and become more involved in raising them. They work with peers who have been through the court system, successfully obtaining custody of their children, and are educated on proper etiquette when interacting with judges, social workers, etc. Similarly, our Parent for Parent program works with CPS involved mothers and fathers who lost custody of their children and are court ordered to engage in parenting support programs in order to prove they are ready and capable to have their children returned home. Past parents who have had to walk this same path serve as mentors for those currently going though this process and are supported with information, resources and parenting classes on how to achieve this and be reunited with their children as soon as possible. SafeCare is an in-home service programs provided through our contracted coaches where parents review health, nutrition and parent-child interaction components to regain custody of their children and more importantly, avoid future CPS involvement. Over the years, the community partnerships that have been established and nurtured has allowed MCFHC to continue connecting families with what they need to achieve their individual and family goals. Current and regular donation sources that allow us to give household items, clothing and hygiene supplies to families are Bed Bath and Beyond, Good360 and World Vision. We are also a site with a plethora of volunteer opportunities for those hoping to give back to the community or internship opportunities to gain training in the childcare, early learning or social and human services career fields. We strive to interconnect resources from one program to the other, as individuals and families have multiple needs that can be covered by our multi-program agency. As we continue to expand partnerships in our surrounding communities, we have now outgrown our space and are working toward a capital campaign to raise funds for a new building and more administrative staff to serve more children and families in Pierce, King, Kitsap, Thurston Snohomish and other counties. We'd welcome and appreciate any way you would like to give your time and be a part of the Multicultural Family!
