Mission Statement
The Chicago Bridge Project builds community by sharing warm food and clothing with our most vulnerable neighbors.
About This Cause
Every week CBP rescues hundreds of pounds of high-quality food from Chicago’s hotels, office buildings and events and we redistribute those resources to organizations serving Chicago’s vulnerable and underserved citizens. We began rescuing food in October 2019 and diverted over 5,000 pounds of high-quality food from waste to usefulness through the end of the year. Before the pandemic struck we were on pace to rescue over 60,000 pounds of food from landfills this year. We manage our programs out of donated space at Grace Church in Logan Square and are looking for a new location that will allow us to expand our programs. We host a monthly service day when our volunteers gather to prepare and package a meal, sort clothing and package toiletries, a handmade greeting card and other niceties for distribution. When everything is ready we load it into our cars and drive to the Loop or Garfield Park. In the Loop we load up our wagons and walk the streets looking for our neighbors who might be hungry or in need of clothing, a hug or even a toothbrush. We offer a meal, conversation and the support of human connection. In Garfield Park we serve out of the backs of our cars as the community congregates when we arrive. Our mission is the same as in the Loop- share a meal and some clothing and listen to the stories of our neighbors so we can show love and build the bridges that can lift us all. Our outcomes are measured in our empty soup pots and clothing bags. We distribute about 100 meals per month on our service day and about 500 pounds of clothing. We do not have metrics measuring the impact, but we know that 100 people are less hungry than they were and have something to wear that they did not before. We know they can have the basic human dignity of combing their hair and brushing their teeth. We know the love we feel from those we serve as they respond to the love we share with them. The Chicago Bridge Project is proud to partner with Urban Village Church, Morton Salt, Inclusive Collective, Park Ridge Community Church, Rotary Club of Chicago, WeWork, First Presbyterian Church in Wheaton, the Church of Latter-Day Saints and the University of Oklahoma Alumni Association Big Event for volunteers and other support. We are rescue allies or receive in-kind donations from Bombas Socks, Panera Bread, Compass Group at 300 E. Randolph St., Compass Group at 300 N. LaSalle St., Guckenheimer Catering at 131 S. Dearborn St. and 300 E.
