Mission Statement
Sexual Violence Law Center (SVLC) protects the privacy, safety, and civil rights of survivors of sexual violence through holistic, survivor-centered legal advocacy that is based in race and gender equity principles.
About This Cause
The Sexual Violence Law Center (SVLC) envisions a world where: • Survivor voices are respected and uplifted; • Survivor experiences are treated with dignity; and • Perpetrators and systems are held accountable. Where 1 in 3 women, 1 in 6 men, and 1 in 2 nonbinary persons will experience sexual violence in their lifetime, SVLC fills Washington’s current gap in serving the legal needs of victims of sexual assault, abuse, stalking, trafficking and sexual harassment by focusing on providing comprehensive services and legal representation in emergency cases for sexual assault victims. SVLC is the only statewide legal services program of its kind that serves survivors of sexual violence that are not considered domestic violence (intimate partner), such as abuse by a neighbor, employer, classmate, acquaintance, etc. SVLC attorneys provide free legal assistance and representation in multiple areas that can affect a survivor after a sexual assault, including employment, housing, education, immigration, safety, privacy, financial and criminal issues. It is crucial for a survivors’s long-term recovery, to understand what legal protections and rights they have after a sexual assault. Media teaches people about reporting to the police. However, less than 30% of sexual assault survivors will make a police report. Access to an attorney trained and experienced in addressing this wide range of legal issues will mean the difference between a sexual assault merely being the worst event a survivor ever experiences and it being the event that fundamentally and irrevocably disrupts every aspect of their life and their future.
