About This Cause
The Ecumenical Assembly of Bartholomew County Churches, Inc., commonly called Love Chapel, is a not-for profit organization supported by over 60 churches, 20 businesses and thousands of individuals in Bartholomew County, Indiana. Love Chapel, in existence for over 54 years, operates a food pantry (including four mobile Outreach Food Pantries each month), homeless shelter, school backpack program, and financial assistance office. In 2023, Love Chapel distributed approximately 1,600,000 pounds of food (including fresh produce) through its food pantry and other food programs. During a typical month, more than 1,200 households are served at the food pantry. Each week, approximately 800 low-income, food-insecure students in 14 Bartholomew County schools are provided with food for the weekend. A protein, multiple fruit servings, pudding, granola bars, and other healthy food is delivered to each school weekly. Weekly mobile Outreach Food Pantries are held in the outlying areas of the county to get food to residents who face transportation and other challenges getting to the centralized food pantry. Love Chapel also coordinates the county-wide hot meal program where a free dinner is provided every night of the week. Brighter Days Housing, a shelter for homeless adults, opened in 2016 and has a capacity of 50 people. In 2022, 632 unique individuals were served at the shelter with an average stay of 22.5 days per client. Case management is provided, providing assistance with job hunting, disability applications, referrals to mental health and addiction services, finding permanent housing, budgeting, and life skills. Assistance with rent and utilities is also available. In 2023, more than $400,000 in financial assistance was provided to keep utilities connected and people housed. Love Chapel has a staff of 21 individuals and over 250 regular volunteers to perform its mission. All services are free of charge and available to all Bartholomew County residents without any form of discrimination.
