Mission Statement
The National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAVS) is dedicated to ending the exploitation of animals used in science. NAVS promotes greater compassion, respect and justice for animals through educational and advocacy programs based on respected ethical, scientific, and legal theory. Supported by extensive documentation of the cruelty and waste of vivisection, NAVS works to increase public awareness about animal experimentation, to promote positive solutions that advance humane science, to support the development of alternatives to the use of animals, and in cooperation with like-minded individuals and groups, to effect changes which help to end the unnecessary suffering of animals.
About This Cause
NAVS is a respected leader of advocates for animals and better, more humane science. Founded in 1929, NAVS is a national not-for-profit organization with a proud history of promoting positive solutions to replace cruel, costly and flawed animal experiments with modern, innovative methods of research, safety testing and education. NAVS works with scientists from academia, government and industry to develop and implement smarter, human-relevant research methods that replace the use of animals through funding of the International Foundation for Ethical Research (IFER) and other promising collaborations with the scientific community. NAVS supports integrating today’s technology into science classrooms to make the life sciences more exciting as well as more humane by providing safer, cost-effective educational resources to replace animal dissection, By recognizing humane science achievements at science fairs, NAVS is providing positive incentives for future generations of researchers to advance science without harming animals. NAVS empowers individuals to make a positive difference by providing timely information on pending legislation and ways animals are used in science so they can easily take action, spread the word, and make informed, compassionate choices. NAVS’ Sanctuary Fund advances greater compassion for animals by providing emergency financial assistance to support animals retired from laboratories and those threatened by natural and man-made disasters.
