About This Cause
Our Mission: Streator Unlimited, Inc. is committed to enriching the lives of adults with disabilities by teaching skills that will enable them to reach their fullest potential, live as independently as possible and become integrated into the community. 1. SU began in 1965. This is our 50th anniversary! 2. Our five group homes provide 24 hour/day support for 32 adults with developmental disabilities This includes all aspects of having a healthy and active life in the Streator community. 3. We help people with a great variety of disabilities find jobs in our community. We’ve trained with national experts through the RICES (Rural Illinois Customized Employment Sustainability) Project. We also focus to working with students with disabilities upon graduation so that they don’t lose their good habits. 4. We provide day and vocational training to 71 adults with developmental disabilities. These include classes such as nutrition, digital photography, men’s and women’s club, sports, job skills, arts and crafts, basic academics, utilization of computers and outings. We keep an herb and vegetable garden. 5. We provide paid work opportunities to adults with primarily developmental disabilities at our sheltered workshop. We maintain a variety of contracts to give our consumers opportunities to expand their skills. We dry flowers to make memorial wreaths, shred documents, confidentially destroy computer hard drives. We do engraving, dry-coat painting, washing and repair of plastic totes, packaging, assembly, quality control inspections, mailings, swapping out and trimming of dip tubes, and ironing. We with support workers in the community at places like US Foods, the Illinois State Police Headquarters and a number of local businesses. 6. We run an 8-unit apartment building for low-income adults with disabilities. We provide limited supports, such as representative payee/money management services and help with shopping and doctor appointments. We are preparing a donated house to expand housing for the people we serve. 7. State funding cuts and late payments have had a negative impact. We offer fewer outings and recreational opportunities, nurse old equipment past its useful life, reduce service levels where we must, at times have paid interest on a line of credit in order to make payroll and pay bills. In the most challenging times we have been grateful for the support of the Streator Community, Streator Area United Way, and LaSalle County Mental Health Board. 8. We have 66 employees and a budget of $2.6 million. We are one of the ten largest employers in Streator. 9. Please “Like” us on Facebook and visit our website: www.streatorunlimited.org.
