About This Cause
The Carole Robertson Center for Learning (the Center) is a nonprofit organization serving more than 1,500 children, youth (0-17), and their families in more than two dozen communities across Chicago. The Center is one of the largest early childhood organizations in the City of Chicago, serving linguistically and culturally diverse populations, and with recent growth made possible by federal funding, the Center has become the city’s largest birth-to-three program provider. The Carole Robertson Center was founded in 1976 by parents and other community residents who rallied to save their local after school program when its sponsoring agency closed. Since then, we’ve grown into a trusted and valued early childhood and youth development organization that is known to provide high-caliber programs in underserved communities in the City. Our programs reach children at every stage of development, from before birth to age 17. We are one of the only nonprofit organizations in Chicago that has every early childhood service delivery model to offer: center-based early childhood (6 weeks to 5 years) at our flagship locations in North Lawndale, Little Village, and Albany Park; a network of family child care homes; home visiting for expecting parents and children 0-3 years, micro-centers in charter elementary schools, and small partner sites. These various program models prioritize equity and access to quality early childhood, family choice, and a broad footprint of options. We provide out-of-school-time (OST) programming across four sites (two sites are located in our own buildings and two are located in elementary schools), allowing us to serve youth before and after school, as well as during the summer. There is a strong tie between our OST and early childhood programs: 90 percent of OST program participants also participated in the Center’s early learning programs. Family support and mental health supports and services undergird all of our programmatic efforts as we work to help position all young children and youth to reach their full potential. Our learning and evaluation department is an authentic partner to program staff across our delivery models to ensure we collect, analyze and utilize data for continuous improvement and innovation. The Center has effectively created and managed a community training program for early childhood providers across more than 30 zip codes. This allows us to provide essential trainings as well as trainings and hands-on experiences to deepen their knowledge and practices. This commitment allows us to partner with early learning providers to elevate quality and deepen impact for young children and families. Our quality programs have been honored and recognized at the city, state, and national levels. These achievements include receiving the Governor’s Award of Excellence for Inclusion of Children with Special Needs in 2016, maintaining the ExceleRate Illinois Gold Circle of Quality since 2008, and keeping accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children since 2004.
