Mission Statement
The mission of El Centro is, "Strengthening communities and improving lives of Latinos and others through educational, social and economic opportunities."
About This Cause
El Centro has been a trusted community resource, serving Latino immigrants and families in Wyandotte and Johnson Counties in Kansas since 1976. While our programs and services have changed over the years, our clients know they can reach out to us as a safe place to ask questions and get the right information in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner. We embrace family members no matter what their stage of life and take a comprehensive approach in strengthening families throughout all of our programs. Although we have special expertise with Latinos, our doors are open to anyone who is in need of our services. We provide the following services: • Academy for Children-an all-day, year-round, dual-language, pre-K school attended by upwards of 85 children aged 2½-5 giving them a solid foundation for when they enter Kindergarten, through age-appropriate enriching activities. • Economic Empowerment -interactive program working with families to give them skills in budgeting, asset building, saving for a home, job placement, job training and working toward life-goals, breaking the cycle of poverty and bringing them to a more financially-stable place. • VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance)-volunteers assisting moderate- to low-income people in filling out/filing their tax returns. • Promotoras de Salud-trained community volunteers who connect with the community to inform friends, neighbors, and community-at-large about issues relating to health, along with informing them about El Centro's services. • Health Navigation-works with people who are under-/uninsured getting them the healthcare they need. Our Health Navigators guide people through the challenges of healthcare, including translation services, billing questions, and safety-net insurance programs. • Advocacy-something that runs through all of our programs and is a service we provide so those who feel they have no voice will have someone advocating with them, along with educating people about the issues important to them.
