Mission Statement

Law Center for Better Housing provides free legal and supportive services to improve housing stability for lower-income renters while advocating for the rights of all renters until everyone in Chicago has a safe, decent, and affordable place to call home.

About This Cause

Since 1980, Law Center for Better Housing (LCBH) has provided free legal and supportive services for renters facing eviction or living in substandard housing conditions. LCBH is the only legal aid organization in Chicago that focuses exclusively on serving low and moderate-income renters in the private (non-subsidized) housing market. LCBH serves families in the private, non-subsidized rental market who are rent-burdened, with many paying 50% or more of their income toward rent. We intervene before renters are forced out of their homes and holistically address both the short-term housing crisis and its underlying causes. Our grasp of local evictions data and national best practices make LCBH the go-to source for issue leadership. Our Chicago Evictions Data Portal reveals the demographics, causes, and conditions of evictions over the last decade. Our staff regularly communicate with the public and decisionmakers regarding what we learn about the inequities and impacts of Chicago’s evictions system.
