Mission Statement

River Bend Food Bank leads the community-wide effort to end hunger in eastern Iowa and western Illinois.

About This Cause

River Bend Food Bank helps people experiencing hunger by providing free and convenient access to healthy food through a network of community food pantries. A food bank is a “hub,” a charitable organization that solicits, rescues, safely stores, and distributes millions of pounds of food at free or deeply discounted rates (approx. $0.05 per pound) to a network of hundreds of food pantries in a designated service area. A food pantry is a room at a church, community center, school, or other local organization where a person experiencing hunger can go to get food in a time of need. River Bend Food Bank operates three warehouse facilities to distribute food across the service area. The primary location is an 85,000 sq. ft. space in Davenport, Iowa with 10,000 sq. ft. of cooler/freezer storage for housing perishable foods like fresh produce, dairy products, and frozen proteins - over 20 million meals are distributed from the Food Bank’s three warehouses to hundreds of network food pantries EVERY YEAR. Distributing this amount of meals takes thousands of volunteers, hundreds of partners, and the dedicated staff of the Food Bank: School Pantries are located on the grounds of over 50 schools to provide an accessible source of food assistance to low-income students and their families. Over 200 Mobile Food Pantries are held each year in our service area where the need is greatest. Each Mobile Food Pantry distribution provides 10,000 meals and feeds hundreds of people. Every Friday during the school year, 3,000 children at risk of weekend hunger receive a backpack of meals (over 630,000 meals each year). The food is nutritious, child friendly, shelf stable, and easy to eat. Senior Pantries are located at 11 low-income senior apartment complexes. They provide free, nutritious, healthy food to at-risk seniors who have unique nutritional needs related to aging and medical conditions. Over 300 Partner Agencies – a network of food pantries, meal sites, and other community organizations – distribute food from River Bend Food Bank in their local areas, collectively providing over 13 million meals each year to people facing hunger. Service Insights and evidence-based Client Empowerment Interventions help identify what additional resources – like financial literacy coaching, workforce development, and IL and IA SNAP assistance – can help individuals no longer need emergency food support so they can reach their full potential for healthy, thriving lives.
