The mission of Near North Health Service Corporation is to provide access to high quality health care and improve the health and well-being of the diverse communities we serve. We are a culturally sensitive and culturally competent patient-centered community health center that empowers individuals through education, disease prevention and health promotion, regardless of one's ability to pay. We seek to employ innovative, evidence-based practices and leverage technology to achieve and sustain positive health outcomes for our patients.
About This Cause
Established in 1966 and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 1982, Near North Health Service Corporation (Near North) exists to provide low-income individuals and families throughout Chicago with access to quality, affordable healthcare. Near North has grown from a single health clinic located on the 1400 block of North Cleveland Avenue to 10 full-service health centers and/or WIC (Women, Infants and Children) sites located throughout the city’s Near North, Near South and Near West Side of Chicago. We serve more than 45,000 medically under-served, uninsured and low-income men, women and children each year through integrated primary care, social service, health education, nutrition voucher and nutrition education programs, as well as specialty services such as ophthalmology, dental, podiatry, and psychiatry. We are not just another local health center: our patients live in more than 150 zip codes. Programs and Services Near North maintains a community health perspective that seeks to identify the underlying cause of major health problems, and develop community-based, prevention-oriented solutions to address those problems. Our health centers offer an integrated slate of clinical and nonclinical programs and services: Medical Services • Internal Medicine • Women's Health • Pediatric care • Specialty vision, dental, podiatry, psychiatry and ophthalmology. Programs are offered on a sliding fee scale but no one is turned away for inability to pay 85% of our patients live below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level ($51,500 for a family of four). 35% have no health insurance, 52% have Medicaid and 6% have Medicare. Our patient base is 67% African-American and 23% Latinx--minority groups who suffer a greater number of health disparities than their Caucasian counterparts. Nearly two-thirds are women and children.
