Mission Statement
The Ethiopian Community Association of Chicago, Inc. (ECAC) is a community-based non-profit organization committed to serving the needs of Ethiopians and other immigrant and refugee communities.
About This Cause
ECAC is a gathering point and source of support for Ethiopians in Chicagoland and encourages the promotion of Ethiopian culture through educational and social events, celebrations and a cultural museum. ECAC is also a multi-service refugee resettlement agency which provides vital services to refugees arriving from across the globe who have fled persecution, violence, and war. History: ECAC was founded in 1984 as a grassroots committee of five refugees who had fled civil war in their homeland. As thousands of Ethiopian refugees arrived in Chicago with no support system, little formal education, and few skills needed to survive in the United States, ECAC responded by providing a variety of social and supportive services. In 1992, ECAC became an affiliate of the Ethiopian Community Development Council (ECDC), one of nine organizations under contract with the US Department of State to resettle refugees in the United States. Thus ECAC began expanding its services to those of other ethnic backgrounds. In December 2009, ECAC purchased its own property in Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood. With the new facility the association was able to expand its resettlement and employment services and acquire a collection of nearly 2,000 Ethiopian artifacts donated to ECAC for the establishment of the nation’s only Ethiopian cultural museum.
