Mission Statement
The mission of the Chicago Abortion Fund is to advance reproductive autonomy and justice for everyone by providing financial, logistical, and emotional support to people seeking abortion services and by building collective power and fostering partnerships for political and cultural change. We envision a world where everyone has the freedom and autonomy to create lives, families, and communities that are healthy, safe, and thriving and where the full range of reproductive choices, including abortion, are accessible and affirmed.
About This Cause
The US Supreme Court has overturned Roe v Wade. Even though this was the decision we were expecting, it doesn’t make it any less devastating for the state of abortion access and the millions of people it will impact nationwide. The Chicago Abortion Fund (CAF) has been helping people access abortion care since 1985. CAF callers have been living in a post-Roe reality for decades. CAF staff and volunteer case managers are experts at getting people the care they need, no matter what. No court will stop us. Visit www.chicagoabortionfund.org for more information about our work. In 2018 CAF supported less than 200 people; in 2019 when the bans were introduced, this increased to 824. In 2020, CAF supported approximately 1600 and in 2022, close to 3000. From January to May, we heard from over 2,500 people and have attempted to support every single person who reaches out to us. In addition to providing funding directly to over 55 partner clinics across seven states for appointments, CAF offers intensive logistical support to callers, including assistance with determining Medicaid or private insurance eligibility, clinic options, transportation plans, additional funding sources, utilizing sick leave, taking time off of school, and making childcare plans. CAF also offers wrap-around supports for people seeking abortion, including logistical and financial support for transportation, lodging, medication, food, childcare, and contraception coverage. Our work builds rapport between our case manager and caller, enlists the caller as an active participant rather than a passive recipient of ‘charity’. In addition to our direct service work we have always recognized the critical role we as abortion funders and people who have abortions must occupy in changing the landscape for abortion access. We are in the process of analyzing data from 100 interviews our Reproductive Justice Researchers completed with our callers post abortion in 2021, and will use this information to inform our strategy and policy initiatives, and to form an advisory board of CAF grantees. Here in Illinois we are part of two coalitions that work together to advance reproductive justice policies in our state, and we are working with various national campaigns to expand and advance RJ and make people aware of the state of abortion access beyond the “pro choice” narrative. We believe this work is critical and that it complements our efforts to ensure that all who have access to care need it, and are not further stigmatized or experiencing structural barriers to accessing abortion.
