Mission Statement
The mission of WINGS Program, Inc. is to provide housing, integrated services, education and advocacy to end domestic violence.
About This Cause
WINGS began by providing transitional housing and support services in suburban Cook County. As a result of the increased demand for emergency shelter, WINGS opened a Suburban Safe House in 2005 in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and WINGS Metro in 2016 in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood of Chicago. Since 1985, WINGS has provided over one million nights of shelter and safe housing to survivors of domestic violence. Now, as the largest provider of domestic violence services in Illinois, in fiscal year 2023 WINGS provided 1,219 survivors with individualized resources: emergency, transitional, permanent supportive housing and rapid rehousing along with community-based services. Recognizing that survivors of domestic violence and homelessness all face different barriers to stability, WINGS offers a continuum of services including housing across Metropolitan Chicago, counseling, financial guidance, legal advocacy, career development, life skills, a comprehensive Children and Family Services Program and community-based services including mentors and hospital partnerships. Refined over 38 years of service, the agency has continually produced successful outcomes working toward the vision of creating a society where every survivor has a voice and the resources to break the cycle of domestic violence. An award-winning agency, WINGS has received the coveted 4-Star Rating from Charity Navigator, Platinum Rating from Candid/Guidestar and is an accredited non-profit by the BBB. This year WINGS won three National Purple Ribbon Awards from DomesticShelters.Org: Best New Service Launch for Survivor Lifeline, Annual Report of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Award for Board Emeritus Rita Canning. In Fiscal Year 2023, WINGS saw the following outcomes for clients completing an exit survey: • 96% of Safe House participants reported feeling safe; • 93% of Safe House adults reported knowing more about community resources; • 63% of Safe House clients moved to more secure housing including homeownership, private housing, public housing, family/friends or WINGS or Transitional Housing program. • 92% of Transitional Housing and Rapid Rehousing clients moved into more secure housing.
