Mission Statement
For almost 40 years, Big Shoulders has been at the forefront of efforts to address the issue of education inequality. We believe unequivocally that all students deserve access to high-quality education in a safe and structured environment. Big Shoulders Fund supports an education that addresses the unique needs of each student and puts them on a path to lifelong success.
About This Cause
Founded over 37 years ago by a group of business leaders, Big Shoulders Fund provides support to schools in Chicago and Northwest Indiana with demonstrated need which provide a quality, values-based education for Chicago’s children, thereby contributing to stronger communities. Big Shoulders Fund is unique in that our administrative expenses are supported by an endowment and other income. One hundred percent of funds currently raised support four major areas – scholarships and enrichment, operational improvements, academic programs, and leadership development – with the goal of not just strengthening schools, but whole communities, and preparing students for life-long success. Investing over $35 million annually in 92 schools educating 25,000 children – 73 percent identify as Black or Latino and 65 percent live in poverty. Big Shoulders Fund’s investment is paying off with the schools and students defying national trends - 95 percent of students graduate high school, 81 percent of graduating scholars enroll in college the year following, and alumni graduate from college at nearly twice the national rate, with Black and Latino alumni graduating from college at nearly three and four times the national average respectively.
