Mission Statement
Red Door is a no-kill animal shelter that rescues, shelters and adopts cats, dogs and rabbits--the three most popular pets in the U.S. The occasional chicken or duck is rescued and re-homed as a pet, too.
About This Cause
Red Door believes in helping pet animals who need rescue, shelter and adoption into homes--primarily cats, dogs and rabbits, the three most popular pets in the U.S. We are a no-kill organization, meaning we never euthanize an animal in order to make space for a new one. Our animals have no dated "shelf life." Still, even the most difficult to place animals--shy, elderly, and those with non-life-threatening medical conditions-eventually find homes through us. We place a special emphasis on pet rabbits, who are often overlooked or disregarded by other shelters. Red Door is the premiere no-kill rabbit rescue in the Chicagoland area. We are considered the rabbit experts in the Chicagoland area and we work with numerous city animal control facilities and other shelters, providing education, skills, food and hay for rabbits in other facilities. We also transfer in as many homeless rabbits from other shelters as possible. We are known for our outside rescue of abandoned of pet rabbits (not wild bunnies). We provide numerous free educational seminars throughout the year on pet rabbits, since we feel that ignorance of their care often leads to abandonment or neglect. All of our cats, dogs and rabbits are throughly vet-checked, spayed/neutered, microchipped, fecal tested, vaccinated when appropriate (rabbits are not vaccinated in the U.S.), and treated for parasites. We give our adopters complete medical records. Chickens and ducks are vet-checked, fecal tested and treated for parasites. We provide other as-needed medical services to our shelter animals, such as dentals, x-rays, ultra-sounds, and bloodwork. Because our animals live in a cageless environment, we have a great sense of their personalities and so we can help adopters find the right temperament. We do our work strictly with private donations. We receive no city, county, state or federal aid. We are not a big or fancy shelter, just a little shelter with a big heart.
