Mission Statement

Zenith Community Arts Foundation (ZCAF) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization committed to arts advocacy, arts education, industrial arts, and public art. It seeks to use art and creativity to enrich the Greater Washington DC area, with an emphasis on the local community. ZCAF achieves its goals by fostering alliances among area artists, businesses, other non-profits, and government agencies. To counter the decline of woodshops, ZCAF has begun teaching woodworking skills to a new generation of students through its Mobile Woodshop, which carries instructors, tools, and materials to teaching sites. In doing so, it plans to create job opportunities for unemployed and underserved communities. The

About This Cause

The Mobile Woodshop (MWS) program is focused on a dual track. The first is focused on teaching professional skills to individuals interested in pursuing a career in carpentry. According to the National Association of Home Builders, carpentry is the most endangered career in the building industry. ZCAF’s Pre-Apprenticeship Training will help to meet this need by training a new generation of carpenters. We seek to partner with builders, construction companies, and cabinet makers that have employment opportunities for individuals who have gone through our training. Small classes will ensure that participants receive individualized attention, gain confidence through sequential learning, and benefit from a low student/teacher ratio. The second track will be oriented to individuals interested in artistic applications and do-it-yourself projects. The target audience for the MWS includes men and women of any age, including veterans, seniors, and artists. This program will be anchored in a permanent studio at ZCAF Headquarters in Ward 4, where large equipment, projects and lumber are stored. Sustainability is important to the MWS program. Much of the lumber will come from locally harvested trees in partnership with DC Department of Transportation ‘s Urban Forester. Our motto is Made in DC, Grown in DC. We seek to raise public awareness about the value of local trees to the city, its economy, and the environment.
