Mission Statement

The Survivor Mitzvah Project is a 501c3 non-profit public charity that is an urgent humanitarian effort dedicated to providing direct and continuous financial aid to elderly and forgotten Holocaust Survivors throughout Eastern Europe who are ill, isolated, and impoverished. The Survivor Mitzvah Project brings emergency aid to elderly survivors who have no other lifeline, so that they will be cared for and receive necessary food, medicine, heat and shelter. We also provide kindness, compassion, friendship and hope.

About This Cause

The Survivor Mitzvah Project (SMP) is an urgent humanitarian effort providing direct financial aid to Holocaust survivors in Eastern Europe who are in desperate need of food, medicine, heat and shelter. In their 80s/90s many are sole survivors of their families, murdered by the Nazis; some are the last Jews in their town/village. Ill, isolated, alone, they are all in critical need. The Survivor Mitzvah Project helps Holocaust Survivors in 8 countries: Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Slovakia, Ukraine, and parts of Russia. In Eastern Europe there is no basic healthcare/medical insurance, Social Security, Medicare, assisted living facilities. The SMP Emergency Aid Program is their only lifeline. Living in small run-down huts or apartments in terrible disrepair, many do not have heat or indoor plumbing. Due to meager pensions (some as low as $10/month), and no reparations, they are forced to choose daily between food, heat or medications. They simply cannot afford all three The SMP Emergency Aid Program changes all that, providing survivors financial aid on an ongoing basis so they can continuously purchase nutritious food, heat, shelter, and life-saving medications. We also provide funds to pay for surgeries and emergencies. The Survivor Mitzvah Project’s Emergency Aid program is the only one of its kind, with funds going directly into the hands of elderly survivors in need. The impact of our program is lifesaving, as evidenced by the thousands of letters of thanks we receive. As Tzyle B. from Ukraine puts it, “I simply could not live without your help.” During SMP’s expeditions overseas, we seek out/identify more survivors needing aid. With your help, we can continue to expand to bring more help. Our work has been recognized by The Simon Wiesenthal Center and we have received the CNN HERO. This is a grassroots effort at a unique moment in time. This the last generation of Holocaust Survivors and we are the last generation to have the honor and the duty to help them. Please join us in the urgent humanitarian effort.
