Mission Statement

Redford Brightmoor Initiative builds community and supports youth and adults to prepare for meaningful employment and service.

About This Cause

Started in 2012, Redford Brightmoor Initiative (RBI) was created to support the communities of Brightmoor (Detroit) and Redford. With our 2 Free Stores, considered the anchor program of our organization, as well as community meals, community garden, diaper bank, food pantry, laundry assistance program, visiting nurse, mobile dentist, mechanic, mobile shower program and more, we have served over 3,000 families since our inception. We offer holiday programming throughout the year as well as programming specifically for the children who live nearby. Those programs include backpack and school supply giveaway, tutoring program, family fun day, and more. One of the largest neighborhoods in Detroit, Brightmoor is home to over 12,000 people, over half living below the poverty level. With more than 1,000 vacant homes, the neighborhood is full of blight, empty lots, and barren streets. Water shut offs, foreclosures and evictions, and homes that are unsafe to live in are not uncommon. Over the years, RBI has become a gathering place for people in the Brightmoor community - to meet, chat, share resources, receive needed assistance and be a part of a support system in their neighborhood.
