Mission Statement
Urban Peace Institute implements comprehensive community safety strategies and dismantles harmful systems to ensure justice and freedom from violence. We work to end injustice, violence and oppression of people who have been historically criminalized and marginalized. By expanding evidence and place-based community violence interventions, building power and assisting new regions, we advance solutions that lead to urban peace.
About This Cause
The Urban Peace Institute (UPI) is a Los Angeles based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, dedicated to reducing violence and building community safety in our most vulnerable communities. The work of UPI and our partners is critical to disrupting gun and gang violence, creating community safety, and transforming lives. We are a community-first organization dedicated to championing community-based organizations, uplifting the voices of community violence intervention workers, or “peacemakers,” and nurturing the next generation of young activists through our programs and advocacy. Historically, our communities have experienced alarming rates of violence and social unrest brought on by the effects of systemic inequality, lack of resources, limited access to support services, and mass incarceration of Black and Brown people. UPI works to dismantle these harmful systems through unique solutions and alternatives to address this lack of resources and overcriminalization of our marginalized communities. At UPI, we believe that every individual deserves to live a life of peace, hope, and power. Since our inception in 2006, we have both been an integral part of critical progress and have continued to witness urgent needs in the communities we serve. The organization has trained over 5,700 peacemakers nationwide, and our programs have empowered countless individuals to create safer neighborhoods through innovative trainings and youth justice initiatives. Yet, the demand for our services continues to grow as many neighborhoods still grapple with violence and social inequities.
