MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART

Mission Statement

The MCA is an artist-activated and audience-engaged contemporary art museum. We generate art, ideas, and conversation around the creative process. We are a cultural leader of local necessity and international distinction.

About This Cause

The MCA is an innovative and compelling center of contemporary art where the public can directly experience the work and ideas of living artists, and understand the historical, social and cultural context of the art of our time. The museum boldly interweaves exhibitions, performances, collections, and educational programs to excite, challenge, and illuminate our visitors and to provide insight into the creative process. The MCA aspires to engage a broad and diverse audience, create a sense of community, and be a place for contemplation, stimulation, and discussion about contemporary art and culture. The MCA was founded in 1964 by a group of collectors, art dealers, artists, art critics, and architects united under the belief that Chicago deserved a great contemporary art museum that was dedicated to exploring the new. The institution’s founders created the museum as a Kunsthalle (noncollecting “art hall”) that hosted temporary exhibitions of new and experimental artists. Since opening its doors in 1967, the MCA has featured the work of emerging artists, many of whom went on to have influential careers. With a donation from the artist Marisol, the Board formally established the permanent collection in 1974. Recognizing the important role of performance in contemporary art, the MCA has blurred the lines between visual and performance art since its founding. In 1996, the MCA formally established the Performance Department, now MCA Stage.
