Mission Statement
To inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens.
About This Cause
We provide youth services for kids ages 6-18 in the areas of Educational & Career Development, Character & Leadership Development, Healthy Lifestyles, Sports/Recreation/Fitness & the Arts. At the Boys & Girls Club of Danville, we aggressively tackle the community need for supplemental educational assistance through Power for Life, which consists of three premier programs: Power Hour, Power Ahead, and Power Prep. In Power Hour, Club youth complete homework with the assistance of staff and volunteers during their first hour at the Club. If they have no homework, we provide group high-yield learning activities that are also fun, they can read, we have them complete worksheets or participate in other group learning program areas. Through the completion of daily work and additional academic exercises, members not only obtain academic competency, but also establish structured and productive study habits, perform better in school, and gain an understanding that hard-work leads to success in life. Academic preparation continues during the summer in Power Ahead, where our Club kids complete exercises from the Bridges curriculum each day. This curriculum, which is used as the primary text in D118 summer school, begins with a review of materials learned in the previous grade and advances members to work they will undertake in the upcoming school year. By reviewing previously learned information and skills and by learning new ones, members not only improve academic competency and consistency, but also perform better both in the classroom and on standardized tests as well as becoming prepared for the upcoming new school year. Danville District 118 will spend part of the first semester going over the previous year’s learning. To further strengthen the academic proficiency of our members, we implement a one-on-one tutoring program called Power Prep. Using a ‘back to basics approach’, members receive more focused individual assistance from staff and volunteer tutors in reading, math and any other subjects they need help with for two to three forty-minute sessions/week or whenever needed. Power Prep occurs during the entire program day throughout the year. Read Naturally, a reading development and comprehension program, is used to help improve language skills while flashcards, tables, computer programs, and other techniques are used for math. We also maintain close contact with District 118 faculty, who periodically provide additional insight, guidance and/or assignments to help us more efficiently aid struggling students. Through this daily personalized and interactive assistance, we not only help members meet academic benchmarks, but also improve their self-esteem and behavior. This past year, we also continued the new Goals for Graduation curriculum for our middle and high school students during the school year as well as during our summer session. “Goals for Graduation” introduces members to academic goal-setting by linking their future aspirations with focused actions today. The program’s recognition strategy is designed to give members constant, intentional encouragement as their successes are acknowledged and reinforced at every step of their journey. The program uses one-on-one, small-group and large-group activities to support academic goal setting, learning and success in school. Members practice initial goal-setting on achievable goals with the leadership, guidance and encouragement of the Club’s staff. In goal-setting sessions, members set more challenging goals. Through this incremental goal-setting approach, members create an action plan with daily and weekly goals leading to short- and long-term academic gains. Our caring adult staff provide life lessons for youth who through us learn about respect for self and others as well as how to make positive decisions. We also teach positive conflict resolution skills and provide opportunities for our Club kids to reach for a brighter future. We open the door to a brighter future in everything that we provide.
