About This Cause
Located outside of Washington, D.C., Jill’s House is the world’s leading respite facility for children between the ages of six and 17 with intellectual disabilities such as autism, Down syndrome, and brain injuries. The first and only of its kind, Jill’s House is an impeccably safe facility designed with special children in mind. While children enjoy overnight stays with activities such as indoor swimming, playing on an accessible playground, music, and arts and crafts, their families get the worry-free rest they need to be renewed and refreshed. This is important because families of children with special needs experience more stress, higher divorce rates, and find it difficult to provide the time and attention their children need. Parents sleep less, and marriages become more vulnerable when chronic, daily stress builds. This stress has been shown to further delay the child’s development since weary, stressed caregivers cannot provide the kind of attention and structure that children crave. Jill’s House gives these families a break so they can be the best they can be for their children, and each other. In fact, studies show that when we care for a child for just one night, stress levels drop nearly 60 percent.
