Mission Statement

Students Without Limits is a 501c3 nonprofit organization in San Diego, California that provides legal, mental health and continuing education support to underserved minority and immigrant teens from low-income families who will be first-generation college students.

About This Cause

Unfortunately, thousands of immigrant youth and families across San Diego (where approximately one in seven school-aged children has at least one undocumented parent at risk for deportation) are filled with fear and continue to face numerous challenges including family separation, trafficking and limited rights and opportunities due to their immigration status. Students Without Limits (SWOL) is a 501c3 charitable organization that provides year-round attorney and school psychologist led workshops, support groups and individual counseling sessions to high school students at no cost. SWOL is an attorney/psychologist/volunteer team that facilitates these workshops at school sites which students have named their “little family meetings.” Our attorney-led workshops educate immigrant youth from various international countries (mostly Latino) about immigration options and continuing their education. Our psychologist-led sessions provide a platform for students to share their struggles and learn positive mental health skills. SWOL was founded in response to the demand for our specialized resources in San Diego where school and community resources are stretched thin or nonexistent. Many undocumented youth still believe they cannot attend college and therefore are at greater risk of falling through the cracks due to feelings of hopelessness and despair. Through our tried and true three-pronged approach, students are provided with legal advice, mental health counseling, continuing education support, as well as life skills and leadership development. SWOL is in its 11 year of operation and has grown from serving a small classroom of students in Barrio Logan to serving nearly 600 students at 20 public schools across San Diego this past school year. SWOL also partners with seven colleges/universities. SWOL’s results speak volumes. To date, 100 percent of SWOL’s high school seniors graduate high school and 98 percent attend college on average each year. A general service outline is provided below: • Student workshops (legal, mental health and continuing education support) at 20 schools • Individual student and family support, includes finding housing, food, employment, insurance, etc. • Mentor support for students from SWOL alumni • DACA renewal application support for those with DACA (DACA is still unavailable for new applicants) • U Visa and SIJS (Special Immigrant Juvenile Status) application support • College and financial aid application support for senior high school students • SWOL scholarship applications for senior high school and college students • "Know Your Rights" workshops for families • College and university workshops, presentations and trainings • Trainings for personnel at schools and organizations on critical issues impacting underserved immigrant youth and effective strategies and approaches to supporting their positive mental health and future success – To date, over 3,000 school staff have been trained across San Diego • Networking and partnering with other community organizations - it truly takes a village!
