Mission Statement
At Prairie Rivers Network, we protect water, heal land, and inspire change. Using the creative power of science, law, and collective action, we protect and restore our rivers, return healthy soils and diverse wildlife to our lands, and transform how we care for the earth and for each other.
About This Cause
WHAT WE DO: We are Illinois’ advocate for clean water and healthy rivers. We champion clean, healthy rivers and lakes and safe drinking water to benefit the people and wildlife of Illinois. We advocate public policies and cultural values that sustain the ecological health and biological diversity of water resources and aquatic ecosystems. Prairie Rivers Network works to reduce water pollution, preserve river habitat and flow, and promote river stewardship in the following areas: WATCHDOGGING POLLUTION PERMITS: We review permits that regulate the pollution discharge from sewage treatment plants, coal mines, ethanol plants, factory farms, and many other industrial facilities that dump large amounts of polluted water into our rivers and streams. We advocate for strict pollution control, innovative treatment practices, and enforcement of permits and the Clean Water Act. CURBING AGRICULTURAL POLLUTION We work on both the farm and policy level to reduce nutrient pollution from industrial agriculture by promoting best management practices to reduce erosion and run-off pollution of pesticides, herbicides, and excess nitrogen and phosphorous. PROTECTING CLEAN WATER IN THE COALFIELDS Prairie Rivers Network advocates for federal and state policies to protect drinking water and the health of our rivers from coal pollution. We help communities to organize to protect their drinking water and natural resources. We envision a just transition from a coal economy to a sustainable, clean-energy economy. FACTORY FARM WATCH When factory farms do not manage animal waste properly, streams, lakes, and groundwater can be contaminated. Prairie Rivers Network helps local residents organize to protect their natural resources and way of life, and advocates for policies that will keep animal waste out of our water. STORMWATER SOLUTIONS Urban run-off pollution happens when rain water and snowmelt flow over pavement and other hard surfaces, washing lawn chemicals and fertilizers, pet waste, and trash directly into streams and causing flooding, polluted water, and erosion problems downstream. Prairie Rivers Network promotes rain gardens, rain barrels, and wider solutions that capture more water where it falls. PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF ASIAN CARP AND INVASIVE SPECIES Asian Carp are the latest in a long line of invasive species that threaten the Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins. These huge fish reproduce rapidly and are voracious eaters, destroying the habitat of native fish species. At stake is a $7 billion fishing industry, as well as the industries built on recreational boaters, anglers and other tourists. Prairie Rivers Network is working with state and national partners to demand that the half-measures that constitute current policy be replaced by a permanent solution to the problem: restoring the natural divide between the basins. PROTECTING AND CONNECTING RIVERSIDE HABITAT Rivers and riverside habitat are critical for the survival of the remaining wildlife of North America. Prairie Rivers Network works to protect in-stream water flow, wetlands, and riverside habitat to provide needed refuges and migration pathways for species forced to adapt to a changing climate. Two of our projects are to restore the Mississippi River from too much control by dams and levees operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and to restore and conserve wildlife habitat along the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers by working with land conservation groups. TRAINING AND NETWORKING AMONG WATERSHED GROUPS AND CONSERVATIONISTS A network of engaged citizens, groups, and agencies are needed to protect the clean water flowing through our rivers and streams and to safeguard natural areas surrounding our river banks. We provide workshops, resources, and technical assistance to individuals, groups, and communities working to protect their local rivers and streams.
